Case Studies
Southern Documentary Fund (SDF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2003 in Durham, North Carolina that seeks to inspire the preservation of stories from the American South and to empower resources for documentary artists. With a staff of one and a volunteer core of eight, we have been working with SDF to help prepare it for sound operational growth and sustainability.

We Listened
Meeting with staff, Board and Advisory Council volunteers, thoughtful questions were asked of SDF and the needs of the organization were shared with GLO to help define the project.

We Planned
arrow The 5th anniversary celebration screening and reception was designed to engage and thank prospective and current donors and to raise funds for operations
arrow An organizational assessment was planned to facilitate the development of operational policies and procedures
We Engaged
arrow The crowd of nearly 600 people for SDF: Reel Stories at The Carolina Theatre provided both financial support through memberships and donations as well as a significant constituent base for future participation in SDF programs and solicitations. By all counts a tremendous success!
arrow Collecting administrative, financial and program data from SDF organization files, staff, Board Chair and accountant, we built an operational infrastructure to guide growth and sustainability. An operations manual provides structure and organization as well as a form for consistent communication and action.
